Attention film photographers...

Does anyone know the best way to wind used film back onto the spool if the camera is broken and won't do this itself? Can I just take it into a darkroom (ok, my closet) and wind it in manually?Alternatively... anyone have suggestions as to what might be wrong if the camera isn't winding? It's a regular SLR, nothing special, kinda old.

for some reason it wrote "is that bad?" in the subject line. ODD! ..but yes, it did work for me. I was using 120 though. you prolly gots a 35mm canister dont ya?

Ha, maybe that phrase was in your buffer or something and you accidentally pasted.Anyway, yeah, it's a 35mm. But it doesn't seem like there would be a difference in the mechanics of the film roll.. is there?

i'm not sure how much you know about 120 film backs, so i apologize if i'm master of the obvious. a 120 film back has two film spools. as you advance the film it winds from one spool to the other. the end of the roll isn't as securely fastened to the original spool as 35mm film is, and it isn't encased in a metal canister so it's a tad bit easier to remind. you can rewind 35mm film manually but it might be more of a pain that it is worth. are you trying to save the images you've already shot or just the film in general?does your slr have an auto rewind or are you using manual?

Oh, sure (manually rewind). I've done it a couple times. Just make sure it's a very dark closet. Try not to scratch the film on anything.

I have no technical photography knowledge, so this is good info --thanks! :)I want to save this particular roll of film that I've already shot, if possible. My camera has manual rewind. I don't know why, but the rewind mechanism or whatever just isn't engaging when I press the Button Thingy in on the bottom (I hope I'm being clear..haha).

it's quite possible that roll is just stuck. for the safety of your film i recommend taking your camera to a lab (one hour will do) and having them remove the film from the camera for you. it seems like the safest way of getting the film out. it's rather common so you have a good chance of getting someone that has done it 100s of times before. way back in the olden days when i worked in a lab we had a dark box behind that counter that we would use to remove stuck film from cameras. they can remove your film in a secure, light tight environment and give you your camera back. most often no harm no foul, whatever caused the jam may also have scratched the film and you might lose a couple frames in the process, but you should be able to save most of it. if you take it to a place like cameras west in downtown they will probably be able to remove your film safely and take a look at your camera and let you know if it needs to be cleaned or repaired. i hope this helps.

Thanks so much! I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing get it out than trust myself to do it. I'll check out cameras west.
